CHILDREN’S COMMISSIONER VISITS NORTH SCHOOLS
Tam Baillie, Scotland’s Commissioner for Children and Young People will visit two schools in Moray and Highland tomorrow (Friday January 22) as a forerunner to a national initiative to seek the views and opinions of Scotland’s youth.
Students at St Geraldine’s School, Lossiemouth and Nairn Academy, Nairn will have the opportunity to meet the Commissioner, learn about the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Children and also bring up issues that concern them growing up in Scotland.
Tam Baillie said:
“My role is to speak on behalf of Scotland’s children so it is vital that I take the time to listen to them.
“I want to hear from as many children and young people as possible to set the agenda for what I need to investigate in coming years. Later this year I am launching ‘A Right Blether’ which will draw together views from throughout Scotland and culminate in a national vote for children and young people on the issues that concern them.
“Visiting schools like these and speaking with the students is an important way to highlight children’s rights and to ensure young people’s voices are heard.” Highland Youth Convener, Magnus Monahan who will be joining the Commissioner at Nairn Academy said: “I am really pleased that the Commissioner is coming up to the Highlands. It’s very important that young people are listened to and this is a great chance for the students at Nairn to tell the Commissioner what they think.”
